I plan on obtaining a degree in computer science in order to become a software developer. This is because I want to make an impact in the world to make it a better place. Computer science is a field that can be applied to anything and everything because technology is constantly changing and improving our quality of life. The field has always fascinated me because by writing some simple lines of code, I can make or change the appearance of a website. Programming was first introduced to me by the website known as Tumblr. Being able to go in and change the layout of my blog was what sparked my interest and I learned some of the basics through there. I then began to learn some of the basic functions of HTML and PhotoShop.

When I discovered that DeVry had a high school, I immediately applied to transfer schools. I was ecstatic when I received my acceptance letter because I knew that I would be able to get a head start in my education and graduate with an associate’s degree. Still, I wanted to have some outside experience. At CoderDojo, I help teach children how to write code and guide them through the process. I even took the liberty of teaching myself how to use different coding languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and jQuery by using Codecademy, Treehouse, programming books, and attending various coding workshops.

As a female, I have come across some people that would try to steer me away from my dreams by telling me that I am not capable of doing such things or even saying that computer science is for males only. But, I did not let the negative energy get to me. Instead, I joined the Chicago Girls in Computing where a group of us females help support and encourage each other in pursuing an education and career in computer science. Through them, I found out about the National Center for Women and Information Technology. I applied for their Aspirations in Computing award and won an affiliate award for my state. When I was searching for scholarships, I came across Google’s Computer Science Summer Institute and applied. I was elated when I received the call telling me that I was accepted! Attending the program was an amazing experience that I am very grateful for. It boosted my confidence in my aspirations, taught me life skills, created a learning foundation in coding, and gave me the chance to meet some life-long friends.

Now, I am one of the top computer science students in my year. I tutor my fellow classmates in learning Python and still manage to have a job, get straight A’s, and maintain three active volunteer roles. Currently, I help out with facilitating teen programs at one of my local museums, co-organize an event with the national organization RailsBridge, and am a part of developing a new organization in my city to teach people of all ages how to make their own game apps using Javascript. I know that gaining experience outside of my classes will prepare me in having a career that I love by expanding my knowledge, developing my skills, and allow me to network with professionals.
