Music and Kinesiology, school to be named
Local Chicago Area Mensa Scholarship Recipient

I plan to major in music and kinesiology in college because music and fitness are my greatest loves. Music is one of the most vital parts of who I am. I started singing from the moment I could talk and performed in numerous grade school musicals and events. As a result, I knew from a young age that singing would not be just a hobby but my passion. My dedication to music has led me to be a member of the choir all four years in high school. I have also taken voice lessons for four years. This includes singing at winter and spring concert each year and competing in the Illinois Association State and Solo and Ensemble contest. I have earned division one at this contest all three years. In addition to this, I have performed in three spring musicals and have been asked to sing at weddings, funerals and anniversaries. Lastly, I have been a choir member and cantor at my parish throughout my grade school and high school years.

By using music to connect emotionally with others and touch other people’s lives, I realized it is my dream to study music. I know that as music major, I will have the chance to refine my voice, learn new singing techniques, and discover who I am as a performer. I know I will be successful in this field because of my determination, drive and enthusiasm. I am very aware that musicians can face much criticism and competition. However, there is no obstacle I feel I cannot overcome, and I never let others stand in the way of my dreams. In the future, I ultimately would like to be a performer because I feel at home when I am on a stage. I hope to be singing a combination of classical and Broadway songs.

My interest in kinesiology stems from my scientific curiosity and my health conscious lifestyle. My winning seventh grade science fair project focused on the effects of yoga and aerobics on math performance. From a young age, I have been very attentive to treating my body with respect. Being involved in sports such as volleyball and soccer in grade school and tennis throughout my high school years influenced my interest in exercising. Furthermore, being a ballet dancer for fourteen years also has added my attraction to fitness. Over the years, I have devised exercise plans not only for myself but for my friends and family members. Therefore, I wish to motivate others to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Specifically, I want to focus my attention on teaching people how to eat a nutritious diet and care for their bodies. I want to be able to work with healthy people and people with health issues such as obesity. I wish to help already healthy people stay in shape and empower people with health problems to be more conscientious about their health choices. I am also interested in teaching yoga, pilates, and aerobic dance classes. It is my dream to show people that exercise can be fun and enjoyable. As a result of my energy and positive attitude, I am sure I can inspire others to share my excitement for health.
